Identify a bug

Cockroaches

None of these bite in any way worth worrying about. The reason to identify yours is that the four common species live in different places and need completely different responses — and one of them is not a pest at all.

5 species, each checked against a reference source.

Start with a photograph

Identify an insect from a photo. The result includes confidence, common lookalikes and a plain safety assessment; read its accuracy and limits before treating a low-evidence photo as definitive.

Which one you have, in about ten seconds

Size and the plate behind the head do almost all of it, and where you found it confirms the answer. This is worth getting right before spending any money, because treatment aimed at the wrong species reliably fails.

One large roach is a different problem from three small ones

The instinct on seeing a big cockroach is that things are bad, and it is usually backwards. A single large American cockroach at night near a bathroom has almost certainly come up a drain — it is a route problem, fixed with water in the trap and a sealed pipe collar. Small tan roaches with stripes, especially wingless striped nymphs, mean German cockroaches breeding on site, and that is the serious finding whatever the size. Nymphs are the signal worth acting on, not the dimensions of the adult.

Common questions

Do cockroaches bite people?

Effectively never. Documented bites are extremely rare and confined to heavy infestations. The genuine health concern is allergens from droppings and shed skins, which are an established asthma trigger.

Does having them mean my house is dirty?

No. They arrive in packaging, second-hand appliances and shared walls, and they need only warmth, moisture and traces of food. Clean homes get cockroaches.

Is a water bug the same as a cockroach?

In American usage, usually yes — it normally means an American cockroach from the drains. True giant water bugs are aquatic insects and are a completely different animal.

When do I need a professional?

German cockroaches breeding indoors, generally. A partial treatment leaves a population that recovers, which is why this species in particular is worth paying someone to finish properly.
