Beetles
Beetles are the largest group of animals on earth and almost none of them can do anything to you. The handful worth knowing about here do not bite — they work chemically, which is why the usual advice about watching for jaws misses them entirely.

Guides for bugs described by appearance
Knowing you have a beetle at all
Beetles get reported as spiders, ticks, cockroaches and bed bugs more than any other group, because the body plan is so variable. One character settles it almost every time.
- A hard line straight down the back where two wing cases meet. Nothing else has it.
- Six legs. A spider beetle looks convincingly like a spider until you count.
- Antennae, always — ticks and spiders have none at all.
- The wing cases are armour, not wings; the flight wings unfold from underneath them.
- Larvae look nothing like the adults, so a grub and a beetle from the same species share no useful features.
The dangerous ones don't bite
Every other group on this site is judged on whether it will bite or sting you. Beetles break that rule. A blister beetle carries cantharidin and raises a blister only when it is crushed against skin, so the injury happens at the moment somebody swats one off their arm. Carpet beetles cause an itchy rash through larval hairs, and get blamed for bed bug bites they are incapable of inflicting. In both cases looking for the animal that bit you is looking for something that does not exist, and the right response — brush it off, find the larvae — is not what a bite would call for.
Common questions
Which beetles are actually dangerous in the US?
Essentially none in the medical sense. Blister beetles raise a skin blister if crushed, and a few rove beetles do something similar. There is nothing here comparable to a widow or a recluse.
Something beetle-shaped bit me. What was it?
Most likely an Asian lady beetle, which does nip and is the usual answer when someone is certain a ladybug bit them. Native ladybugs essentially do not.
I found a tiny beetle in my kitchen. Does it matter?
It matters for the food, not for you. Grain beetles, biscuit beetles and spider beetles all mean something dry has been open too long. None of them can harm a person.
What is the fuzzy little thing in my wardrobe?
Probably a carpet beetle larva. It eats wool, silk and feathers, leaves shed skins behind, and is the reason for irregular holes in knitwear that no moth was ever seen near.
